    Try This at Home!

* The Dr. Seuss Story Maker lets children create their own Dr. Seuss story.

* "Raising Readers," a video starring parents and their young children, shows how fun, everyday activities can help young children get ready to read.

* Check out the featured activity for preschoolers from Reading Is Fundamental.

What happens in your home is important for your child's literacy development.  Does your child have books of his or her own?  Does your child see you reading?  If you are a teacher, does your classroom have books and writing materials readily available for the children?

The Get Ready to Read! Checklists can help you create a literacy-friendly environment. There are separate checklists for the home, early childhood classroom, and family child care.

The Get Ready to Read! screening tool provides a "snapshot" of where a four-year-old is on the path to developing important early literacy skills.

"What I Learned About This Child..."  is a form that can help a preschool teacher pass this information onto a child's kindergarten teacher in a meaningful and easy to understand way.

Virginia Buysse and Ellen Peisner-Feinberg conducted a webinar in April on Recognition & Response

Now you can view this presentation to learn about methods of universal screening and progress monitoring and review instructional support strategies for use in pre-K. (Scroll down to middle of page to view.)

* TeacherTube, created by a superintendent, makes it easier for teachers to share educational videos for classroom use.

* The Joan Ganz Cooney Center, established by Sesame Workshop, is working to make preschool and early education materials available on the Web.

* Help young children get ready for reading with the Get Ready to Read! skill-building early literacy activities.

In a study published in the journal Child Development, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that playing numerical board games might help low-income preschoolers improve counting and other basic math skills, offering a promising way to reduce the discrepancies in numerical knowledge between children from poor families and those from middle-income families.

The National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) recently released the "2007 State Preschool Yearbook."

The 2007 yearbook discusses several positive signs in states' 2006-07 pre-K data, and holds the most comprehensive information available on public preschool in the United States.
